ABSTRACT
This tutorial targets researchers and practitioners in human-computer interaction, interaction design, and software development. It focuses on the novel interaction paradigms introduced by visionOS. We explore spatial input techniques, specifically gaze-based and gesture-based interaction, as key enablers of embodied, multimodal user experiences in spatial computing environments. Participants will examine the transition from 2D interaction models (iOS/iPadOS) to 3D spatial interfaces, emphasising the integration of spatial input into existing design workflows. The tutorial addresses the theoretical underpinnings and practical considerations of designing for visionOS, focusing on perceptual load, ergonomic factors, and accessibility.
We will introduce the Speculative Spatial Design Canvas as an educational tool for designing and refining spatial experiences across various disciplines. A demonstration will emphasise its importance in medical and surgical applications, illustrating how collaboration between developers and surgeons promotes innovation. By merging speculative design with spatial computing, we will investigate new paradigms for advancing medical training, optimising surgical workflows, and enhancing real-time assistance in the operating room.
