ABSTRACT
This session delves into the transformative role of artificial intelligence within extended reality (XR) applications in the medical field. Participants will explore cutting-edge AI-driven XR technologies used for diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical simulations, and patient rehabilitation. Importantly, the session adopts a pragmatic approach to addressing the ethical implications of integrating AI into XR. Discussions will focus on practical solutions for data privacy, mitigating algorithmic bias, ensuring informed consent, and maintaining robust patient-provider relationships. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and emphasizing actionable strategies, this session aims to advance responsible innovation and ensure that AI-enhanced XR solutions uphold ethical standards in healthcare.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS
Dr. Gerson Yoshinari is a distinguished specialist in Radiology Oncology with a comprehensive background in both engineering and medicine. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Control and Automation Engineering from the Federal University of Itajubá - UNIFEI, Brazil (2005) and a Medical degree with a specialization in Radiology Oncology. Dr. Yoshinari earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Oncology, focusing on Cell Therapy and Stem Cells, from the Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto – USP, Brazil. He further pursued postdoctoral research in Artificial Intelligence applied to Medicine at UNIFEI and holds a postgraduate degree in Philosophy from Estácio University, Brazil.
Currently, Dr. Yoshinari serves as a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Itajubá - FMIT, Brazil, and coordinates the Academic Innovation Center. He is a practicing radiation oncologist at Oncominas Group, Brazil. He is a member of the Steering Committee in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at the International Chair in Bioethics (ICB). Additionally, he coordinates the FMIT unit of the ICB, where he integrates ethical considerations into the advancement of medical technologies.

Dr. Luciano Vitorino, RN, PhD, is a professor and researcher specializing in mental health, spirituality and health, geriatrics, epidemiology, and artificial intelligence in the context of health education. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, as well as his Master’s and Doctorate, from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), Brazil. During his doctoral studies, he participated in a sandwich Ph.D. program at the University of Alberta, Canada, where he honed advanced skills in statistical analysis. Dr. Vitorino completed his postdoctoral research at the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil, focusing on the impact of spirituality and religiosity on cognitive function in older adults, as part of a four-year longitudinal study.
Currently, Dr. Vitorino is a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Itajubá (FMIT), Brazil, where he also serves as the Coordinator of the Advisory Commission for Evaluations, a member of the Collegiate Body, and the Research Ethics Committee. He is a member of the Steering Committee in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at the International Chair in Bioethics (ICB) at FMIT, integrating ethical considerations into the advancement of medical technologies.
