H-PORT: A VR-Based Digital Twin Simulator for Next-Generation Hydrogen Port Hubs
DESCRIPTION

H-PORT is an AI-powered, VR-based simulation platform developed by XR Solution in partnership with the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Research Team of the DIMEG Department at UniversitĆ della Calabria. The system combines digital twin technology with immersive extended reality to model, test, and optimize real port operations in the context of next-generation hydrogen energy hubs.
The platform enables field operators, technicians, supervisors, and engineering students to safely practice high-risk hydrogen procedures across four core training modules: gaseous hydrogen yard and cascade management, dispenser operations, cryogenic LHā‚‚ storage and cold box handling, and bunkering jetty ship-to-shore operations. Each scenario replicates operational cause-and-effect logic, alarms, safety interlocks, and abnormal event response bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world hydrogen workflows.
A key innovation of H-PORT is its AI tutor AURORA, which provides in-session guided learning and structured post-scenario debriefing. Combined with KPI-based performance reporting, the system enables repeatable, measurable, and auditable training sessions. The underlying digital twin simulator supports decision-making across logistics, energy flows, and safety optimization, providing a robust validation environment for hydrogen hub layouts and operational protocols.
The modular architecture is designed for replicability across multiple European port contexts, from land-side electrolysis and compression systems to future bunkering operations, with full compliance with international safety standards. Target impact metrics include a 30% reduction in CO₂ emissions, a 20% increase in port throughput, and over €1M in annual operational savings.
